Mission statement – College of Liberal Arts

The mission of the College of Liberal Arts is to provide a comprehensive education that prepares students to think critically and creatively, express themselves effectively in oral and written forms, and develop lifelong skills of analysis and inquiry. Through its Humanities programs the college seeks to bring students to a more mature and sophisticated understanding of the nature of the human condition, humanity’s struggle to attain satisfaction in life through the telling of its stories, and its attempts to communicate in an unsettled world. Through its Social Sciences programs the college encourages students to appreciate the complexities of social, cultural, and political interactions, past and present, and to seek empirical answers to the challenges of human behaviors. In all areas of the college students are encouraged to consider and analyze a variety of perspectives and become active citizens in an ever-changing world. Through practical and academic study the college follows closely the Norwich mission statement exhorting students to act as well as to conceive, and “to tolerate all opinions when reason is left free to combat them.”
