James Beard Award–winner and Food Network Chopped Champion Jean-Louis Guérin hosted French program director Sophia Mizouni, her students, and the military exchange officers from St-Cyr at his restaurant “NECI on Main” in Montpelier on December 7, 2017. Guérin, who serves as Campus Executive Chef at the New England Culinary Institute, also holds the prestigious title of “Maître Cuisinier” in France.
The Chef concocted a special French tasting menu for our Norwich students, and spoke to them in French about French cuisine, discussing the connections between the landscape and our food, and between cultures and culinary traditions. He guided the students through a tour of the kitchen, his conversation ranging from the philosophical differences between classic and modern cuisine to tutorials on kitchen equipment.
This event is part of the experiential-learning component of the French courses curriculum in which students advance their linguistic and cultural proficiency outside the classroom. The New England Culinary Institute functioned as a learning laboratory, immersing our students in real-life situations. It was also a rewarding way to celebrate the holiday season with delicious soupe à l’onion, coq au vin rouge, and mousse au chocolat.Check out the photo gallery, courtesy of Durwood M.
